How Effective is the PrEP pill?

PrEP medication is highly effective for preventing HIV because it stops the virus from entering and spreading in your body. Specifically, when taken as prescribed, PrEP is 99% effective at preventing HIV from sex and 90% effective at preventing HIV from injection drug use. However, oral PrEP medication is less effective when not taken as prescribed. For those who have difficulty taking a daily oral medication, an injectable form of PrEP is available, which can provide the same benefits.

How to Get PrEP medication

We offer convenient and flexible options for all our patients. Patients can schedule virtual provider visits and receive at-home testing kits or test in-person at a nearby lab. The best part? All patients get confidential PrEP pills delivery. The Q Care Plus team also helps make PrEP medication affordable (usually free!) by working with community partners to cover your cost of visits, labs, and medications.

PrEP Medication FAQs

Who is Q Care Plus for?

Q Care Plus provides services to adults (18 years of age and older) living in eligible states. We offer PrEP and Doxy-PEP prescription services to people who are HIV-negative and telehealth care for people living with HIV.

Do I need a prescription for PrEP?

Yes. PrEP is only available by prescription. To get a PrEP prescription from Q Care Plus, please complete your online profile and schedule your virtual appointment with an expert clinician. All Q Care Plus patients must complete labs. Either you can request an at-home lab kit that we’ll discreetly mail to your door, or you can choose to go to a nearby site for a blood draw. We will test you for HIV, Hepatitis B, kidney function, and other bacterial STIs.

Your clinician will discuss any abnormal results with you and prescribe the remainder of your quarterly PrEP prescription.

Is PrEP with Q Care Plus really free?

Q Care Plus has $0 out-of-pocket costs to sign up for our service. If you’re insured, we will only use your insurance for the medication, and if you have a copay, we will coordinate with the pharmacy to obtain copayment assistance for the medication. Q Care Plus PrEP prescriptions and services are free for nearly all our patients. If there is a cost for you, we will notify you BEFORE your medication is shipped so you can accept charges or cancel your prescription. Please note we are required to use insurance for the medication if you have an active insurance plan that covers PrEP. Your lab testing and provider fees will be covered by a non-profit partner in our eligible states if you are able to utilize their pharmacy network that ships the medication with no shipping fees! Additionally, once on PrEP, doxy-PEP may also be provided at no cost to virtually all Q Care Plus patients.

How fast will I get my test results?

It generally takes 5-7 business days for the lab to receive and process your test kit. Once completed, you can access lab results through the patient portal.

Your provider will reviews the results and reach out to you. You can check the transit status of your lab kit, as well as the results once complete, at https://web.qcareplus.com/login in your “Labs” section.
