What is the ACA? The Affordable Care Act (ACA)–also known as Obamacare–was designed to increase health insurance quality and affordability, lower the uninsured rate by expanding insurance coverage, and reduce the costs of healthcare overall. If you do not have healthcare through your job or if financial barriers are prohibiting your access to care, the ACA may be a good fit for you. People who receive benefits through the ACA are shielded from rising premiums as ACA subsidies increase or decrease in proportion to premiums. Open enrollment – or the period during which you can opt into ACA plans - is happening November 1 through January 15. And please be aware that outside of Open Enrollment, if you experience a major change in your situation — like getting married, having a baby, or losing health coverage — that event can make you eligible for a Special Enrollment Period, allowing you to enroll in health insurance outside the yearly Open Enrollment Period. How to apply The official application for the ACA can be found here. Before applying, make sure you qualify for ACA coverage. How can the ACA help you access PrEP For many people, PrEP can cost extensive amounts of money out of pocket. The average price of PrEP without insurance is $1,758 for a three-month supply. A benefit of the ACA is that it allows you to get healthcare coverage which includes preventive services, like PrEP. This will make getting and staying on PrEP more affordable for you so you can protect your status without expensive co-pays. Of course, Q Care Plus’s dedicated team of providers is always here to help you navigate changes in insurance if you are already on PrEP. Our team will work to make sure there are no gaps in prescription refills during potential insurance shifts, so you never miss a pill! What to do if you have questions If you have any specific questions about open enrollment, don’t hesitate to contact a Q Care Plus provider at hello@qcareplus.com or 888) 708-0561. We can connect you to additional resources based on your geographical location that may help you to apply during Open Enrollment.
